Coach's Corner- What happened to the set position!?

After watching several professional and club games recently I have one question- WHERE IS YOUR SET POSITION?

Typical set stance- legs shoulder width apart, on your toes, slightly bent over, with palms of the hands facing mostly outward and ready to catch the ball, center of gravity is in a position of mobility- It is the stance that we (as goalkeeper coaches) have all seen and know how to teach. Set position is the basis of strong goalkeeping as it allows keepers to transition quickly and correctly into normal contour catches, basket catches, top-hand saves, mid-height extension dives, and sweep-hand collapse/low dives. When a keeper strays from correct set position, they lose/alter their ability to transition effectively into the necessary diving form resulting in poor handling, parries where typically the ball can be caught, and goals due to mistakes. Without a proper set position, a goalkeeper will not be able to perform at their peak levels. Some coaches seem to put such an emphasis on shot stopping, diving, or handling that they forget the necessary prerequisite that puts their keepers in the best position to perform any of those actions. Coaches- remember that set position IS important, IS necessary, and NEEDS to be covered and recovered to ensure that our goalkeepers are making the saves that we know they can make. Keepers- put time and effort into the nuances of goalkeeping. Consciously practice foot/hand positioning, practice your preload before the save, and most of all- Know the proper set position.

Until Next Time,
